Walker’s BMX dream closer to reality

The 20-year-old BMX rider, who will arrive in Beijing ranked No 1 in the world, departs for the United States on Saturday as her virtual preparation for the final moves up a gear. Sarah Walker has been handed a golden opportunity to spend a fortnight at the United States’ BMX training facility.

Pretty (fast) in pink

Kingston BMX Racer Ashly Kenney copped two gold medals in the female novice 14 category at a two-day Ontario Cup series event in Chatham. Yesterday, the youngster reflected on her golden weekend and thanked those most responsible -the boys back home in the Limestone City. “I usually race against guys at the Kingston track, and I actually prefer it that way,” noted the Monday/Wednesday regular at the Peter Brierley Memorial layout at Woodbine Park.

Amanda Browne Receives BMX Sponsorship

Australia-bound

Supertrak BMXers qualify for 2009 world finals The wheels are turning already for the Pierce-Goulet family vacation to Australia next year.
Eight-year-old Alyssa Goulet and her cousins Derrick and Tyler Pierce made those travel plans necessary when they qualified for the Union Cyclist International BMX world championships two weeks ago in Abbotsford.

BMX bandits score Aussies top quota for Beijing Olympics

Australia has secured the maximum quota of BMX riders for the Beijing Olympic Games. The Cyclones can start three men and two women in China on August 20-21 as the sport makes its mark at the highest level. Based on international rankings, Australia has strong medal claims. The men are ranked second in the world behind the US. The women are third behind France and New Zealand.

Too Hungary for rivals

Former WA BMXer Tanya Bailey, who now trains out of the Gold Coast, has all but cemented her place at the Beijing Olympics with an outstanding performance at the world championships.Tanya and Aussie teammate Nicole Callisto faced a tough hurdle to nominate two riders for the Olympics when the third rider Melissa Mankowski crashed out of contention with a knee injury.

Kintner headed to Beijing in BMX

American BMX riders Jill Kintner and Kyle Bennett have earned two coveted tickets to Beijing.The women’s squad was not as lucky. The U.S. finished a close fifth in the final nation’s rankings, with only the top-four countries earning the maximum two women’s spots. Both Kintner and compatriot Ariel Martin missed large blocs of competition from 2006-2008. Martin, America’s other heavy hitter, suffered an injury at the Christmas Classic race in 2006 and did not return from competition until July of 2007. Kintner, a four-time world champion in the sport of Four-cross mountain biking, did not transition to full-time BMX racing until mid 2007.

BMX event riding into fairgrounds

294914z1.jpgMorgan County residents interested in going “back to the roots” of Bicycle Motor Cross racing will have the opportunity Friday evening. As part of the activities during Relay for Life this weekend, there will be BMX races for boys and girls in several divisions, starting with the 5-6 age group at the horse arena at the Morgan County Fairgrounds, said Bruce Balay, a former Martinsville resident who is helping put on the event. The arena will be transformed into a BMX track with ramps for participants of all ages to try.

Asian American Olympic Hopefuls

Hayashi, 22, was born in Hawai‘i and said she dreamed of being an Olympic athlete since she was in elementary school. Hayashi’s mom first encouraged her to try BMX racing, a sport that her brother and cousin pursued before her. According to Hayashi, BMX racing is a family-oriented sport that teaches discipline, determination, focus and sportsmanship. It’s also fun to race friends while flying through the air over dirt jumps.
