Reigning ASP World Junior Champion Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 17-years old, has made ASP history by securing enough ratings points on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) to qualify for the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour well before the halfway point this season – a feat that has never been accomplished by any surfer (male or female) in history.

Telana Flanagan remains in contention to defend her title going into the third and final day of the 2008 Billabong SA Students Sports. Flanagan is the sole survivor from the NMMU women’s squad who won the team event in 2007. Kerri-Leigh Anderson (UCT) looks likely to challenge Flanagan for this year’s individual title while UCT and the University of Stellenbosch (US) each have three team members in the women’s semifinals.

The Supergirl Junior Pro will identify and celebrate the emerging stars in women’s surfing between July 18 - 26 when surfing’s top 18-and-under female surfers will take to the waves in their hunt for standing atop the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) junior ranks and their share of the $12,500 Supergirl Junior Pro prize purse.

The English Surfing Federation Surf School is offering cut price surf lessons to girls or ladies who would like to give the sport a try for the first time. The lessons on Fistral Beach this weekend will also help people wanting to increase their skills with professional coaching. The Rip Curl Girls Tour has teamed up with the ESF to offer girls the chance to learn from their team of pro riders and local qualified coaches.

Lee Ann Curren (FRA), 19, reigning ASP European Champion, was eliminated in Round 2 of the Billabong Surf-Eco Festival in Brazil, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 5-Star event. Curren, who led the small European squad to Praia do Forte, was the only one of four girls in contention to reach Round 2 but was defeated by current ASP Women’s World Tour member Silvana Lima (BRA) and young rising surfer Paige Hareb (NZL).

The New Zealand Surfing Team was announced today with ten of the nations top surfers set to compete at the 2008 ISA World Surfing Games to be held at Costa De Caparica.  The prestigious biennial event known as the Olympics of surfing takes place from the 10th – 19th of October.
