Amateur cyclists participating in the Sea Otter Classic sometimes use vacation time, sick leave and perhaps even feign illness to spend time pedaling on the Monterey Peninsula in April. But it’s doubtful any of the thousands of athletes had a more creative path to Thursday’s opening day of the 18th annual event at Laguna Seca Recreation Area than Stephanie Brodegard.
