Every now and again we get a question from a reader about one of our eight cherished sports. Rather than pretending we have all the answers, we send them to the girls who know best: the pros. – Ed.

Wake and Skate, but not Wakeskate
My name is Devin and I have just started to really get into skateboarding and wakeboarding. I was wondering if you wore helmets when you were first learning how to wakeboard. Also, I live in Indiana, so there is really no place to skate. My dad is building me a halfpipe, but I want to do some street, too; do you have any pointers?

When I first got into wakeboarding, I did not wear a helmet. It is quite safe out there without one. People do wear helmets wakeboarding. If you feel more confident wearing a helmet, you should definitely wear one. Liquid Force is running girls-only camps all over the U.S. — check out liquidforcemaven.com for dates in your area. It is a great way to meet other girls that ride.

That is sick your dad is building you a halfpipe in your backyard — it helps a lot crossing over with other board sports. With street skating you can do that anywhere — keep your eye out for some flat, smooth concrete and little steps. I am sure there is something. Parking lots, schools…use your imagination!

Keep ripping!

Good questions! When you are first learning how to skate, a very mellow setup is very important. If money is no object, go down to Home Depot with Dad and get yourself some supplies.

Mini-ramps (halfpipes) are always fun, just as long as the transitions are mellow to start with. But getting into the street department, you’re going to want to design a box or rail. You could buy a rail online from ccs.com. That is easy and affordable.

The box is a little more complex. A small, 1-foot box would be great for starters. You can find blueprints for one online at ramps.com.

Hope I answered everything for you. And remember to enjoy skating!
