Unidentified Flying Chicken Soars Over Mammoth Mountain
Why did the Chicken boost out of the Superpipe? To dominate all other mascots in the Roxy Chicken Jam Mascot Superpipe Competition presented by ROCKSTAR Energy Drink. The feathered flying snowboarding mascot for the Roxy Chicken Jam, taking place March 28 - 30 at Mammoth Mountain, issued a challenge to all other furry, feathered and flying mascots to test their snowboarding skills against the Olympic-class Roxy snowboarding chicken.
The inaugural Mascot Competition is one of the many highlights at this year’s Fourth Annual Roxy Chicken Jam presented by Schick Quattro for Women. The special event featured ferocious competition as mascots of all shapes, sizes and species took to the Mammoth Superpipe.
Mammoth Mountain’s own “Woolly Mammoth” claimed the crown as he trampled the competition on his way to a $4,000 payday courtesy of ROCKSTAR. To prepare for the contest, Wooly admitted, “I ate my Wheaties, did five or six push-ups, some squat thrusts, drank some ROCKSTAR and I was good to go.” His advice for aspiring mascot champs is, “Grow lots of fur, get a couple tusks, a trunk and some big ears. I just hope I get to keep the $4,000.”
Best costume was awarded to the Zumiez “Couch,” who took a leisurely, yet extremely awkward, stroll down the Superpipe as he captured the hearts of the crowd. “It was fun,” said the Couch. “I didn’t expect to win $1,000 for doing this.” When asked if he had any plans for his newfound fortune, besides maybe a reupholstering, he said “I have no idea,” still experiencing some shock from his triumph over his fellow competitors.
The Mascot Competition also featured local talent with Greg Bretz, a junior from Mammoth High School, taking to the pipe as the school’s mascot, the husky. “It was fun and definitely interesting,” said Bretz about the competition. “There is a first time for everything.” When asked about how it was to ride in the costume, Bretz said, “Riding in a husky suit was pretty difficult; next year I’ll have to find something without a huge head.”
The final day of the Roxy Chicken Jam will be Sunday, March 30, and will feature the Slopestyle finals along with the crowning of the women’s Swatch TTR World Tour Champion. With only five points separating Torah Bright and Kelly Clark for the title, Sunday will be an important day for both the Roxy Chicken Jam and the Swatch TTR World Tour. Check out all the action starting 10:00 A.M. on Sunday, March 30.
The Fourth Annual Roxy Chicken Jam is a six-star Swatch TTR World Tour Event with the World Champion Title and over $150,000 in prize money up for grabs. Combining slopestyle and superpipe, the competition will feature some of the world’s best female snowboarders from March 28 through March 30.
FUEL TV will air the Roxy Chicken Jam on Tuesday, May 13 at 8:00pm ET/PT during its Snow Pack snowboard programming block.
