First day of competition treated contestants to some nice flame-broiled five foot off-shore faces as the first day of competition got under way at the Ala Moana Bowls surf break.  Competitors in the Junior Men, Boys, Menehune, Girls and Bodyboard all got a chance to show the state of Hawaii just where surfing is headed, as the top amateurs from Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai and Hawaii went through the first rounds of surfing. Soon after, Nage Melamed from Kauai dominated her round one heat for a 19.50 total, claiming the highest points for day one of competition.
