Texas women make waves
The world of water sports offered few opportunities to women in the professional ranks during the 1970s. But that didn’t stop Tippy Kelley, owner of Dockside Surf Shop in Flour Bluff. Kelley started surfing in 1966 when she was 13 and later rose to status as a national champ before helping to establish the Texas Gulf Surfing Association. And to hear her tell it, surfing never has been a walk in the park. “It’s easy to get into surfing, but staying with it is the hard part,” Kelley said. “If you’re the type that’s going to cry about breaking a finger nail, it’s not the sport for you.”
